Hi Everyone,

Today on my blog I have a guest post from K. T. Lee, the author of Calculated Contagion.

The Blurb! 36658640

Dani Christensen is a vaccine researcher who has spent her career proving she is more than just the daughter of the company’s CEO. However, as her accomplishments in contagious disease research grow, the wrong people begin to notice. When Dani is isolated from her colleagues at a well-regarded conference in Europe, she is kidnapped and taken to an isolated camp in the Carpathian Mountains.

CIA officers Cam Mitchell and Tyler Scott are sent to observe a suspicious group of armed men in rural Romania. When Cam sees Dani being brought into the camp against her will, he and his partner rescue her and bring her safely back to the United States. The CIA initially believes Dani was kidnapped for ransom, but they soon realize her kidnapper has followed her back to her lab. Now, the CIA must work with their allies in the FBI to catch Dani’s kidnapper before he releases a potentially deadly contagion for his own political gain.

Calculated Contagion is Book 2 in the Calculated Series. All books in the Calculated Series may be enjoyed as standalone novels or as a series.

K. T. Lee’s Guest Post on Research

Research – Do you do it a lot and do you enjoy it?

Believe it or not, writing fiction requires a lot of research. As someone who naturally loves learning new things, research is actually part of the joy of writing for me. For the books in The Calculated Series, I’ve read (and re-read) a number of non-fiction books by people who have served in the military, the CIA, and the FBI. I try to pay close attention to not only the facts they share, but also to how they talk about their experiences.

Because each book in The Calculated Series features a different science specialty, I also do a lot of research online to learn more about the science of each book, from psychology to computer programming to vaccine science. However, because it can often be difficult for a non-expert in the field to interpret this technical information correctly, I also read articles from science communicators who are great at explaining complex concepts. In the case of Calculated Contagion, I researched the incidence and specific subtypes of the measles virus on public health websites. In fact, this deep dive into the topic helped me to create the plot point that allows the heroine of this book to solve the crime. While researching a brand-new topic is always a little overwhelming at first, it generally gives me an opportunity to learn something new and helps me add in a few plot twists along the way.

Finally, I have a number of family members with varied backgrounds who are willing to chime in on my medical, firearms, and military questions. It has definitely resulted in some interesting conversations! My favorite experience so far was when I asked my mom “how long can someone stay knocked out when they get hit over the head?” Rather than getting concerned about her daughter’s hobbies, she gave me the detailed answer I needed. It’s nice to have family who are incredibly supportive of my writing career…no matter how unusual my questions!
